History: Chickweed, the common name came, was thought to have come about because the plant was popularly used for feeding birds and chickens. However is has also a long history of being used for humans in various ways. Culpepper calls it a ..'fine soft pleasing herb, under thedominion of the Moon......and is effectual for all impostumes and swellings, whatsoever; for all redness in the face, wheals, pushes, itch or scabs, the juice being either simply used, or boile din hog's grease'......today we tend to substitute the hog's grease for something a little more appealing such as shea butter and evening primrose oils. However, the country people of past centuries used chickweed juice as a scurvy treatment so it probably contains good amounts of Vitamin C and other nutrients.
