Elderflowers increase elimination via the skin and balance circulation. Elderflower tincture is often used in a mix with peppermint. It is combined with Echinacea tincture as a remedy for ear infections. Elderflower tincture is also helpful in chronic catarrh and allergies, being taken during the hayfever season along with Nettle tincture to reduce the severity of attacks.
Elderflowers are diaphoretic which means that they promote perspiration, thus they are used to regulate temperature by inducing a fine sweat to dissipate the buildup of heat

History: Used as a medicine for colds, flu and respiratory problems since at least Roman times. Native American Indians used it for respiratory and skin conditions. The flowers have long been used in making cooling drinks and cordials. In olden days it was known as the medicine chest of the country people. In the early 20th Century elderflower water was a popular skin tonic for clearing the complexion.
Science: Rutin & Quercetin are antioxidant flavonoids that are thought to be mainly responsible for its therapeutic properties. Quercetin opposes histamine. Elderflowers are also rich in anthocyanines.
