History
St John’s Wort has been documented extensively throughout herbal history. It appears in the writings of Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Pliny, Galen, Paracelsus, Gerard and Culpeper.
Culpeper’s Herbal describes St John’s Wort as a traditional wound herb and notes its historical use for stings, bites and bruises. From the 16th century onward, it became widely recognised in European herbal medicine for its traditional association with nerve health and emotional balance.
Scientific Interest
Modern scientific research has focused on the active constituents of Hypericum perforatum, including hypericin, hyperforin and flavonoids. These compounds have been studied in relation to neurotransmitter activity and nervous system function.
A landmark 1996 meta-analysis published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) reviewed 23 randomised clinical trials and reported that St John’s Wort extracts were more effective than placebo in cases of mild to moderate low mood. Subsequent analyses, including assessments by the Centre for Complementary Health Studies, Exeter, concluded that St John’s Wort showed comparable outcomes to conventional treatments in similar contexts, with fewer reported side effects.
Ongoing research continues to explore additional properties of the plant, including antiviral activity and external applications, reflecting its long-standing traditional use.
